This could be the SEN's, our, Bryan's run to failure moment...trading Vermette and now Kelly were/are not great hockey moves, but eventually you have to move some guys out of the middle of your line up to make room for some fresh blood. The one thing it does present to you is the chance to pick up/up-grade the offence but if you think about it both of these guys had the skill and potential to score big time and didn't!
I like it, it's like going "all in"...now ya gotta draw the cards! And don't kid yourself there is a lot of know-how, luck and skill involved here.
We strongly recommend drafting all skilled forwards, big skilled forwards and more thick skilled forwards...ya can always convert 'em to defencive specialists after if you have to...
Now we (Eugene) gotta give Bryan another contract!

I'm having a harder time with this actually than the Fisher trade. I just think Kelly was better value for what he brought to the ice. Vermette too for that matter... Though I think we all had high hopes for old Snoopy...
ReplyDeleteThough I suppose we have many bottom six centres in the system now. If they can somehow turn all these picks into a few more top six goal scorers, we may be back in business...
Kelly was a very versatile forward who could play in almost all situations, including being great on the kill. Plus he's supposedly lots of fun in the room. But I just don't see him still being here when the team does start to come around even if he doesn't get traded.
ReplyDeleteI really hope the sens can work this so they end up getting a couple top picks so we can land RNH and Landeskog. Far fetched for sure, but as a 67s fan as well, I just don't see the high-end skill out of Landeskog to merit taking him over RNH. (and have heard the sens really like landeskog)

And NO!!! We do not have to give BMil another contract!! Seriously, why on earth would you say such craziness!? How can anyone justify re-hiring him AGAIN?

ReplyDeleteBryan is making himself irreplaceable!
Nik:
ReplyDeleteThis is trading a player when his value is high. Kelly has been one of the most consistent players on a bad team. He's 30 - you know what you're getting, and you also know that there isn't much more upside.
All these picks, and all this cap space - a new GM waiting in the wings? Starting to look that way ... remember - someone from a "winning tradition" (damn I wish we could of bagged Stevie Y). And not some bozo who wants to chase after high priced RFA's, and handcuff us in the future!
Still think there's the possibility of using another team's mismanagement of cap space to further the rebuild ...

In that Bryan has proven himself and his scouting team to be good a drafting, with all these picks, it would make sense to keep him on.
ReplyDeleteMy only beef with him is that he took a year or two too long to start rebuilding. He maybe could have got away with a smaller blow up if he started earlier. Instead he pulled a few Muckler-like moves to try for a playoff run.
I'm sad about Kelly. Fish has been pretty much gone since he got married in my opinion. In retrospect the Nashville trade may have been inevitable... I would also be sad to see Neil or Phillips go (though Phillips could do us a solid and do the rental thing).
That said, I think BM is finally moving in the right direction. Trading and drafting are always gambles, no matter how good you are at betting. However, we know now what we have had with this core group for the last few years, and it has started to stink pretty bad. Something had to give.
Now we hold our collective breath and wait for the young guys to start pouring in. Lets hope they form a new contender here soon. But most of all, lets hope the hockey gets more fun to watch. Youth and enthusiasm can be contagious. I can see why Phillips might want to stay. Who doesn't want to be young again?

ReplyDeleteGonchar was the right move and it killed us! But Bryan built us a new young defence through the draft...
Oman:
ReplyDeleteIf our Team (scouts, Murrays and coaches) do as well with "New" offence as they did with the "D" we are laughing till we get to the "Blue Paint!"
Nik:
ReplyDeleteIf Bryan can find a home for Gonchar, than I'll eat my words and hope he stays. That would be a "magic trick".
